The Mindful Chess Challenge is an opportunity for junior chess players to compete against other young players. It is the perfect first-time tournament for beginners who want to have a go at playing against a group of other students.
Throughout the day, there will be an exciting range of activities on offer, so that siblings and parents can get involved during and in-between rounds. In addition to free chess talks and workshops, there will be creative challenges running throughout the day.
This is more than a tournament. It's a day of chess for the whole family

Each round is 40 minutes and each category is separated by age group. There will be prizes for first, second and third in all categories. All participants will receive a Mindful Chess certificate. First-time tournament players will also receive an additional certificate celebrating their first chess competition.

The Mindful Chess Challenge is a friendly tournament and it is intended to be a fun family event. Our aim is to get younger siblings and parents involved with the chess fun as well. On the day, you will be able to stay up to date with everything that is happening via our official hashtags.
Take a look at some of the activities we will be running throughout the day.
In between rounds, Mindful Chess coaches will be doing game analysis in a classroom. Anyone is welcome to bring their game for review. The room is open during rounds too and all are welcome to use the boards and ask our coaches questions.
Food & Drink
Food and drink will be available throughout the day so that parents can grab a much-needed cup of tea in between rounds. Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase throughout the day.
There will be a selection of stalls selling chess sets, clocks, books, and other chess equipment. The stalls will be open throughout the day.
In addition to offering chess coaching, we will be running mindfulness sessions. The sessions will be a chance to learn more about mindfulness and its relationship with chess. All are welcome to join in and practice mindfulness techniques with our guides.
We will also have chess-related activities and mini-competitions for non-tournament players. This will include a creative photo challenge. These challenges will be a chance for players and their families to get creative and win some bonus prizes!

make a difference
We have been inspired by Babatunde Onakoya's work promoting chess in Nigerian slum communities and therefore all proceeds of the competition will be put towards similar causes.
In 2020, we will start working with teachers in poverty-stricken areas across the globe. We want to provide these teachers with the opportunity to teach chess to children who would not otherwise have access to the game.
